What the Workshop Covers

Students will be introduced to traditional materials and methods used in Renaissance oil painting, including layered painting techniques, careful surface preparation, and an understanding of how images are built gradually over time. Emphasis is placed on process, patience, and learning why each step matters.

Working from a Renaissance Master

During the workshop, students will work from a selected Renaissance painting as a study exercise. This practice reflects historical studio training and supports a deeper understanding of how form, light, and structure are resolved within a finished work. Rather than inventing an image from scratch, students learn through careful observation and disciplined process.

The emphasis is on study and understanding, not on producing an original or display-ready painting. The goal is to experience the method itself and to carry those insights forward into future work.

Who This Workshop Is For

This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as experienced artists who wish to revisit classical foundations. No prior experience with Renaissance methods is required. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace within a supportive, focused environment.

About the Instructor

The workshop is taught by Sharlene Thomas, whose work and teaching emphasize traditional hand skills, material knowledge, and disciplined creative practice. Her training includes direct study with Frank Covino, whose teaching focuses on classical realism and long-established studio methods.
